Change the world

22/01/2020

Nelson Mandela University will host more than 8000 first-year students and their parents and guardians at its annual Welcoming Ceremony on Saturday, 25 January.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Sibongile Muthwa will formally welcome all newcomers to Mandela University. The event, which will be live-streamed to 20 venues, across five campuses, including George, is one of the few opportunities the University has to showcase itself to such a large group of key stakeholders.

Staff support
To facilitate the welcome of such large numbers of visitors, 200-plus How2buddies and security employees will be on duty, as well as academic and support staff.

Shuttles
Branded shuttles have been arranged on North, South and Ocean Sciences Campus to continuously pick up and drop off visitors at the various venues (the full list of venues is attached). There will be five pick-up/drop off points on the campuses that will be sign posted. The shuttles will be in a position to drop off guests at 2nd Avenue Campus should the need arise. See attached map and map image on this page.

Signage and parking
Signage to the various venues will be in place, as well as designated parking areas. Given the large number of people expected and venues used (there are approximately 37 break-away venues), some confusion is inevitable. Hence, a plea to students and their parents to find out which venue they need to be at, before the time.

Programme
While the official programme starts at 9am, students are encouraged to be on campus by 8.15am to avoid traffic jams.

The Meet and Greet section of the programme with faculty staff will begin in each of the venues at 10am.
