Change the world

17/02/2020

A group of protesting students blockaded entrances to some Nelson Mandela University campuses this morning. At the time, the reasons for the blockades had not been communicated to University management through the agreed upon protocols.

The University has since received a memorandum of demands from the protesting students and held a meeting with the Student Representative Council (SRC) this afternoon to engage on the issues raised.

Cognisant of the perennial challenges that arise at the start of the academic year, the University, through various meetings with student leadership since late last year, has been proactively implementing solutions and addressing these issues as they arose.

Some of the concerns raised in the memorandum have already been dealt with through the aforementioned engagements, and this is reflected in the memorandum. Students expressed concerns at the unevenness of the implementation.

In light of today’s engagements with the SRC, academic activities and all University operations will continue as normal tomorrow.

Engagements will continue in a bid to resolve any outstanding issues.

The University will issue a detailed response to the students’ memorandum in due course.
