Change the world

05/07/2023

More than 200 councillors, traditional leaders and municipal employees who took up training under the Department of Building and Human Settlement Development at Nelson Mandela University will be awarded their certificates on Wednesday (05 July 2023) evening.

A total 225 officials from across the Eastern Cape will be awarded certificates, after completing a six-day short learning programme (SLP) in Gqeberha, East London, Mthatha and Komani.

The four areas covered include Theory of Land Use Planning and Management, Social Housing Facilitation and Management, Housing Finance and Administration and Human Settlements (2030) Vision and Organizational Design.

The SLP certification ceremony takes place during a three-day housing Indaba hosted by the Department of Human Settlements at the University’s South Campus. The Human Settlements Indaba is hosted by MEC Siphokazi Lusithi in efforts to fast-track service delivery and improve sustainable housing in the province.

The Human Settlements Indaba is held in partnership with Nelson Mandela University under the theme, “Accelerating the delivery of sustainable integrated human settlements in the Eastern Cape through collaborations and partnerships: Leaving No One and No Place Behind.”

The Human Settlements Indaba will bring together key stakeholders in the human settlements sector, including government, academics, private sector players, NGOs, and civil society organisations. The Indaba will be attended by the Minister of Human Settlements, Honourable Mmamoloko Kubayi, EC Premier, Honourable Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, amongst other government leaders.

The discussions will be on the implementation of the National Housing Programme, the challenges and opportunities of the province, policy developments, financing, and institutional arrangements. In the last two decades, the housing programme has undergone policy revisions, which have shown the transformation from building houses to creating sustainable communities and sustainable urban forms.
