This prestigious appointment highlights Prof van Greunen’s excellence as a researcher and her commitment to advancing technology as a catalyst for human development, inclusion and social transformation. Her work demonstrates how innovative, human-centred approaches can address complex societal challenges.
The appointment is expected to create new opportunities to strengthen Africa–Europe collaboration, expand international research networks, and open pathways for postgraduate students and emerging researchers to participate in globally connected scholarship.

Under the leadership of Prof Van Greunen, the Centre for Community Technologies has established itself as a leader in translating research into practical solutions that improve lives. Guided by the philosophy of “In Africa, for Africa, by Africans”, it works with communities to co-create technology-driven interventions that are relevant, inclusive and sustainable.
In 2025 Prof Van Greunen was a recipient of the Science Diplomacy Award, in the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF)/South32 Awards
The NSTF-South32 Awards — widely known as the "Science Oscars" of South Africa — are the country’s most prestigious public accolades for excellence in Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation. The Science Diplomacy Award acknowledges exceptional contributions to science, technology and innovation that advance collaboration and development across borders.
Among the initiatives recognised was the development of the Agri-Box, an innovative tool that enables small-scale farmers to access scientific soil analysis, helping them improve productivity and respond to climate-related challenges.
