Boccia (pronounced ‘Bot-cha’) is a precision ball sport designed specifically for athletes with a disability affecting loco-motor function, similar to bowls and played on an indoor court. The sport is specifically aimed at enabling persons in wheelchairs. (As pictured below)
As in bowls, a jack is thrown to start the game and then six red and six blue are thrown to as close as possible to the jack. Four ends are played in total and the scores per end are added to determine the final result.
Boccia was introduced as a Paralympic sport in 1984 when 19 athletes represented five different countries. Now, boccia is practised in more than 75 countries worldwide with 116 athletes competing at the next Games.
