Mandela University staff members paid tribute this week to the former Department of Public Administration and Leadership (PML) Head and Director of the Raymond Mhlaba Unit, Dr Sindisile Maclean, who passed away after a short time in hospital.

Colleagues acknowledged their “inspirational manager”, who had also served as a member of the provincial legislature and been a mayor of the Buffalo City Metro before joining the Faculty of Humanities (then Arts).

Dr Kwame Asmah-Andoh, the Acting Head of the Department of Public Management, said colleagues were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr Sindisile Maclean, a former head of their department from 2014 to 2018, who also served “an honorable and productive term” as the Director of the Raymond Mhlaba Unit from 2011.

“We remember him as an inspirational manager, who facilitated and nurtured a successful and healthy teaching and research environment, and who supported and advanced the academic project and assisted colleagues and students alike in advancing their scholarship.“

Dr Asmah-Andoh said he brought his extensive practical experience in public service to his teaching in the discipline and his academic laurels included both critical scholarly publications and generative supervision of students.

“It is fair to say that his leadership of the Raymond Mhlaba Unit contributed immensely to Nelson Mandela University’s community engagement project.

“We remember Dr Maclean as a colleague and friend with a love for his family and a passion for knowledge. We remember him for his kindness, his sense of humour and for the scholarly wisdom he shared with us.”
