Change the world

04/04/2024

Two doctoral degrees in nature conservation will kick-start the 2024 Nelson Mandela University Graduation season for more than 5 600 graduates, starting at George Campus on Friday, 5 April.

A morning and afternoon session on the campus at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains for 372 graduates will be followed by another 16 sessions in Gqeberha from 12 to 21 April at the Indoor Sports Centre on South Campus.

The University’s Chancellor, Dr Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, will officiate at both sessions on Friday at what is only the second time that graduation has been hosted on the George campus.

Appropriately, the two doctorates celebrate this campus’s niche in terms of sustainability studies and practice.

Werner Conradie’s doctoral studies focus on the flora of unexplored parts of south-eastern Angola, including the headwaters of the Okavango River Basin, where eight news species were identified, and many other species have now been properly described and identified.

A fellow nature conservation candidate Noxolo Ndlovu has also added new knowledge in ensuring that the forestry industry continues to protect environmental values and communities who live adjacent to forestry operations through her research around pesticide usage.

Just over 200 graduates will be capped at the morning session of the Engineering, the Built Environment and Technology (EBET) and Science faculties.

This includes 24 students, eight of who obtained a first-class pass, from the first cohort of students in the new Bachelor of Honours in Natural Resource Management qualification introduced in 2023.

An additional 170 students from the Faculty of Business and Economic Science will graduate in the afternoon session.

Gqeberha Graduation

The focus will shift to Gqeberha on Friday, 12 April, with the first of the remaining 16 sessions (as shared below and attached again for your convenience).

The sessions will begin at 9.30am and 2.30pm respectively each day, but not on Saturdays.

As has been the custom of late, each graduate receives four additional tickets for guests (doctoral candidates receive five tickets), a token of appreciation from the alumni office, a programme, and their graduation certificate.

Graduates and their families can also take advantage of the opportunity of an official graduation photographer’s services.

The University also has a website dedicated to what is the highpoint of the academic calendar.

All sessions will be livestreamed on our YouTube channel.
