Reasons to be Proud #R2bP: Mandela University Visual Arts honours student Luke Rudman is one of 14 South African students and 38 globally to have won a Golden Key Outstanding Member Award Scholarship.

Golden Key International Honours Society’s regional director in South Africa Gillian Cloete said: “This award is to celebrate our outstanding members, who demonstrate exceptional achievement in all three Golden Key pillars, namely academic performance, leadership, and community service.

"It is highly competitive, and we are very proud to have so many Southern Africa Members receive these scholarships”.

“I am honoured to be a recipient of the Golden Key Outstanding Member Award. This award affirms so much of the time and work put in to uphold a growth and development mindset. I am grateful to have my progress acknowledged and celebrated, particularly in the last year of my studies.

“Being a Golden Key member has been so beneficial in that it has allowed me to surround myself with like-minded people, as well as to maintain emphasis on self-improvement and development, “ Luke said.

He was also the University’s Abe Bailey travel bursary winner and representative for 2022.

Luke has been working in fine art painting, performance, and environmentalism, since 2019 and believes this kind of award is affirming of the impact and validity of cross-disciplinary practices.

He has also explored his work across various contexts outside of the University space. Some of these include the South African drag scene and queer community, which he is very passionate about, the environmentalism movement within South Africa, including work with Greenpeace Africa over the past four years, and the contemporary fine art industry of South Africa across numerous national exhibitions, art fairs and festivals.

Luke became a Golden Key Member in 2020 and he is looking forward to furthering his work and relationship with the organisation.
