Change the world

Mandela University's Chair for Critical Studies in Higher Education Transformation (CriShet) and the University of Johanneburg's Ali Mazrui Centre and the Post Graduate School's Research & Internationalisation will jointly host the launch of Prof Ihron Rensburg's book - Serving higher purposes - University mergers in post-apartheid South Africa.

The launch, to be hosted online next week, forms part of a series on Higher Education Transformation by editors Prof Andre Keet (DVC: Engagament & Transformation at Mandela Uni) and Prof Michael Cross (Research Professor at UJ)

The book presents a captivating account of one of the most noteworthy events of democratic South Africa - the transformation of the university landscape.

Prof Rensburg recounts both the challenges and successes of the creation of the University of Johannesburg and traces its trajectory from a muddled merger between competing institutions to a truly African university.

Weaving together personal observations, family history, socio-economic theory and even the history of a city, this is a text which offers us not only a glimpse of a particular university, but of how we can be, how we can do, within the space of the university.

The launch will take place on 11 November from 15h00 to 17h00 streamed live to Mandela University's YouTube channel
