The Deputy Minister in the Department of Higher Education and Training, Science and Innovation, Mr Buti Manamela, will be at Nelson Mandela University tomorrow as part of his oversight visit to higher education institutions in the Eastern Cape.

Since the phased return of students to university and college campuses nationwide, in line with DHET’s Risk-Adjusted Strategy, the department has sought biweekly reports from institutions.

This has been to assess institutions’ readiness to receive students as well as to ensure that the requisite measures towards compliance with COVID-19 regulations are firmly in place.

Since the emergence of the pandemic in South Africa, Mandela University, through its Coronavirus Task Team (CTT), has been actively monitoring developments around the pandemic, and putting in place safety measures for the safe continuation of academic activity and operations on campus.

On a broader societal level, and in line with the University’s resolve of being in the service of society, the institution has been pooling its intellectual and other resources to contribute to the provincial efforts against the pandemic through the COVID-19 Coordinating Committee (CCC).

The Deputy Minister’s visit to Mandela University is to physically assess and monitor readiness for the gradual return of staff and students to campus.

Accompanied by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sibongile Muthwa, and members of senior management, the Deputy Minister and his delegation will be presented with the University’s implementation of its COVID-19 plans, since staff and students started returning to campus from May.

The Deputy Minister will go on a walk-about to various parts of the campus to experience the measures in place.

Details of the visit are as follows:

Date: 04 August 2020

Time: 10:30-12:00

Venue: Nelson Mandela University North Campus

In a bid to manage numbers in adherence to the requisite COVID-19 protocols, the number of physical attendees is limited. A Zoom link will be made available to those indicating virtual attendance. Kindly confirm your attendance, in order for the necessary arrangements to be made.
