The Department of Arts, Culture and Heritage has put together a plethora of video clips that captures the flavour, fun and authenticity of Africa, and to celebrate the University’s own students, particularly those living outside of South Africa’s borders on the continent.
“We think especially of our students from throughout Africa – almost 1 000 of them - who are now mostly back in their own countries due to the pandemic. We hope they enjoy these virtual offerings,” says Deputy Director Arts, Culture and Heritage, Ryan Pillay.
The team have shared their celebratory pieces on social media, as well as radio.
The various offerings are:

Nelson Mandela University Choir members and alumni in a special rendition of John Knox Bokwe’s Plea From Africa, arranged and directed by conductor Ulagh Williams.

Three colourful cooking demonstrations of African cuisine presented by national celebrity chef, Khanya Mzongwana will be released during the week.

In addition, two food podcasts. In the first, Port Elizabeth restaurateur Lauren Nash discusses the role of using locally produced products and goods that are organic and naturally from the region. The second features chef, Khanya Mzongwana who talks about African-ness in her curated cuisine.

A video of SAMA award-winning Professor, Dizu Plaatjies’ 2019 performance with Nelson Mandela University’s Afrikan Sounds group (directed by Gareth Williams) will also be released.
In addition, to the ACH offerings, the Office of International Education office will be hosting two webinars today (Monday, 25 May) at 14h30 and 15h40, presented by Prof Uchena Okeja and Prof Rose Boswell respectively - www.facebook.com/MandelaUniInternational/posts/2919301058119585
CANRAD will also host an Africa Day lecture by Prof Josephine Ahikire (Uganda). The lecture, “On Staying Home and The Woman Subject in the Covid-19 Pandemic” will take place from 11h00- 13h00. Zoom link: https://mandela.zoom.us/j/97774711759.
