Change the world

Reasons to be Proud - #R2bP: Budding stock market investors Kyle Johnston, a second year BSc Computer Science student and Francois Burden, a third year Mechatronics student, were runners-up in the 2019 JSE Investment Challenge for university students.

Close friends and gym partners, they aptly named their team “Gym Buddies” and placed second in the University Speculator Portfolio category.  The top three university teams, along with several high school teams, were invited to attend the awards ceremony at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange building in Sandton.

The JSE Investment Challenge is a risk-free, online platform for young people to learn how to trade JSE-listed shares and have fun doing it.  Participants learn how to make informed investment decisions, spot trends and understand the world of investing.

Teams of two to four students sign up and the various groups compete against one another to build the best portfolio.  The challenge takes place in a simulated stock market that imitates the actual stock market and each group is given R1 000 000 of virtual currency to start off with.

“It was a great experience and we look forward to participating in the challenge next year again!” said Kyle and Francois.
