Lecturer in the Faculty of Humanities and the project manager for the Humanising Pedagogy Praxis and Research Niche (HPPRN), Mukhtar Raban, recently received an award for Best Presentation at an international conference in France.

His paper, “Developing and Enacting a Model for Institutional Implementation of the Humanising Pedagogy: Case Study of Nelson Mandela University” was recognised at the ICCPE 2019: International Conference on Critical Pedagogy and Education in Paris, France.

The paper presentation explored how Humanising Pedagogy has been conceptualised and implemented at Mandela University.

Humanising Pedagogy (HP) is one of the research themes of the University. As a philosophy, it informs our learning, teaching, research and engagement agenda.

Mukhtar was appointed as the project manager in 2017 and was tasked to develop a model and plan for advancing HP within the University in 2018. He subsequently developed the HP Enactment and Implementation Model, which was then accepted by the learning and teaching portfolio for implementation.

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) has commended Mandela Univeristy for the prioritisation of a humanising pedagogy and the ways in which we explore it.

Academics from various countries commended Mandela University for taking a bold step in addressing social injustices through the foregrounding of humanising pedagogies. They also commended the manner in which the philosophy is embedded and promoted at the University.

Mukhtar continues to manage the HP project this year and will be offering additional HP activities and workshops.
