A Maqhinebeni-born Nelson Mandela University student has made Mthatha proud by claiming second position in the design category during NMU's annual fashion show.

Thandazani Nofingxana is currently a final year Bachelor of Visual Arts student, majoring in textile design. His educational programme for the year requires students to create garments they would wear themselves. Mohair South Africa, situated in Port Elizabeth, is one of the biggest wool producers in the world. They work hand in hand with NMU and created a programme whereby final year students were required to produce garments with sponsored material from Mohair South Africa.

"I was one of the students chosen by the panel of judges at the beginning of the year when we had to present what we would do with the materials they gave us," he said.

"On November 11, all the finalists had to present their final products at the NMU annual fashion show and my designs were chosen. I then took second position."

He said he is feeling very excited to be among the winners from the rural parts of the Eastern Cape. He expressed his gratitude to the initiators of the programme for giving students an opportunity to showcase their design skills while they are still at university.
