Change the world

16/06/2020

COVID-19 is an unprecedented occurrence in our country's young democracy. It has presented itself not only as a serious health issue, but also a societal one that has once again revealed the deep social crevices.

While young people who contract the virus may be at a lesser risk of falling gravely ill and succumbing to the virus, they may nevertheless inadvertently carry and spread the virus to those more susceptible.

When President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the move to alert level 3 of lockdown, he quoted former president Nelson Mandela as saying "it is now in your hands".

As young people enjoying the fruits of the democracy that the youth of 1976 gallantly fought for, let us remember that today's struggles are now in our hands. You have the power to stop the spread of COVID-19 by abiding by the nationally set lockdown regulations - stay home, observe social distancing, wear a facemask every time you leave the house and wash hands and sanitise regularly.

Let us do our bit to help us to get through this period together, so that we can once again enjoy a COVID-free life... together.
