Change the world

Nelson Mandela University’s economics lecturer, Dr Asanda Fotoyi, will present findings of her ground-breaking doctoral thesis into the National Youth Development Agency’s (NYDA) grant funding in the Eastern Cape.

Dr Fotoyi, who obtained her doctoral degree during the University’s summer graduation in December, focused on the economic impact assessment of the NYDA in one of South Africa’s poorest provinces.

“This research is interesting because the NYDA grant funding provides young South African entrepreneurs with an opportunity to access both financial and non-financial business support,” Dr Fotoyi said.

Her thesis – under the supervision of the Director of the School of Economics, Development Studies and Tourism, Professor Ronney Ncwadi – examined the effectiveness of the grant funding against its main objectives; namely, improved entrepreneurship participation, business skills development and support, and improved creation of job opportunities.

On Friday, Dr Fotoyi will present the findings of her doctoral study in a webinar. Political analyst and lecturer in the University’s Department of History and Political Studies, Dr Ongama Mtimka; NYDA chief executive officer, Mr Waseem Carrim; and lead private sector specialist at the World Bank, Mr Ganesh Rasagam, will be discussants.
