Her current research investigates the use of plant-based gold nanoparticles for colon cancer treatment, aiming to develop a safe and cost-effective alternative to the expensive and side-effect-laden treatments available today.
Holding a BSc in Microbiology from the University of Pretoria, a BSc (Hons) in Medical Biosciences from the University of the Western Cape, and an MSc in Nanoscience (Cum Laude) from Nelson Mandela University, she is now pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Physiology at Nelson Mandela University, focusing on Nanomedicine.
As a mentor for the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, Itumeleng equips young learners with problem-solving and science communication skills.
Her accolades include winning first place in the Young Science Communicators competition (audio category) in 2023, an initiative by SACNASP and SAASTA, and securing first place in the 3-Minute FameLab Science Communication competition at Nelson Mandela University in 2024.
Representing South Africa at the Next Generation Scientist Program at Novartis Pharmaceuticals in Basel, Switzerland in 2023, Itumeleng has also co-authored a research paper published in the renowned Arabic Journal of Chemistry and a book chapter published in the Wiley Library.
Her research has been presented at international conferences such as the Global Young Scientist Summit 2024 and the Network for Sustainable Nanotechnology Global Summit, as well as national conferences including the NanoAfrica 2022 Conference and the International Nanomedicine Webinar.
Dedicated to outreach, Itumeleng regularly interacts with high school students, sharing her scientific knowledge and experiences to inspire the next generation of female scientists.
Her advice to aspiring young scientists is to be their own cheerleaders and always believe in themselves.
She emphasises the importance of a strong support system and having a mentor who believes in, supports, and pushes them to reach for the stars.
Itumeleng's journey and achievements are a testament to the power of determination, mentorship, and self-belief, making her a true role model for young women in science and beyond.
