Nelson Mandela University pays tribute to former Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, who died early on Friday 13 September, 2024.

Dr Gordhan earned numerous accolades for his lifetime of public service, including an honorary doctorate from Nelson Mandela University in 2008.

Pravin Jamnadas Gordhan was born on 12 April 1949 and grew up in Durban, Kwazulu-Natal. After graduating with a Bachelor of Pharmacy from the University of Durban-Westville he completed his postgraduate studies in Human Resource Development.

He also completed a postgraduate diploma in Economics at the London School of Economics.

President Cyril Ramaphosa was among many paying tribute to the former Minister, describing him as an “outstanding leader” and a  “beacon of our fight against corruption”.

“Pravin Gordhan stood up to derision and threats emanating from some in our nation who were scorched by his insistence that justice be dispensed against those who sought to undermine our democracy and raid our public resources and assets,” Ramaphosa said.

Dr Gordhan’s distinguished career as a public servant included his role as commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) from March 1999 to 2009, which helped to transform SARS into a world-class tax and customs administration.

In recognition of his substantial contribution to society by transforming the administration of the SARS into a strategic governmental institution, the University conferred the degree of Doctor of Commerce (Honoris Causa) on Pravin Jamnadas Gordhan.

Under his guidance, SARS evolved into a world-class institution, significantly improving revenue collections and enhancing compliance culture across the nation.

His contributions extended beyond SARS and Dr Gordhan was a staunch advocate for integrity and accountability in government.

His dedication to public service included key roles in negotiations during South Africa's transition to democracy and his involvement in international initiatives.

The former Minister elected to retire from active politics after the general election of 29 May, 2024, to spend time with his family.

A statement released by the family shortly after his passing noted that Gordhan faced a short, courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Vanitha and his daughters Anisha and Priyesha.

Nelson Mandela University extends its heartfelt condolences to the Gordhan family during this difficult time. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations in their pursuit of integrity and public service.
