The creative arts take centre stage at Nelson Mandela University this week, as the institution gears up to host TEDxNelsonMandelaUniversity 2025 under the theme “Redefining Creative Arts.”

The event is proudly hosted by the Innovation Office, which seeks to raise awareness of creativity as a vital component of its broader focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics).

By incorporating the arts into the innovation ecosystem, the office aims to highlight the transformative power of creative expression in shaping ideas, identity and impact.

The event is scheduled to take place on Friday, 17 October, at the Nelson Mandela University Business School Auditorium.

It will feature a series of thought-provoking talks and performances that explore the evolving role of creativity in a rapidly changing world.

In an era defined by technology, social transformation and global interconnectedness, the boundaries of artistic expression are constantly shifting.

This year’s TEDx event gathers artists, academics, entrepreneurs and innovators to explore and celebrate the evolving landscape of creativity and its power to shape culture, identity and the future.

Organised under the official TEDx licence, the independently curated event will feature a rich line-up of speakers whose work exemplifies the evolution of the creative arts.

Among them are South African Cultural Observatory (SACO) executive director, Unathi Lutshaba, speaking on Measuring the Pulse of African Creative Economies; internationally acclaimed designer and founder of MaXhosa Africa, Laduma Ngxokolo, who will trace the journey From Xhosa Beadwork to Global Fashion Runways; and Dr Gcina Mhlophe, renowned author and storyteller, who will reflect on How Writing Influences Cultural Traditions.

Other prominent speakers include Professor Pitika Ntuli on Sculpting Spirit and History from Bone and Stone; Ms Zolani Mahola on Singing Stories of Healing and Hope; and Mr Hlomhla Dandala, exploring how performance can shape identity in Acting Our Stories into Existence.

The day will kick off with a special morning performance, setting the stage for a programme that celebrates the vibrant intersection of arts, culture and innovation.

The event seeks to inspire new ways of thinking about art’s role in society – how it intersects with technology, education, activism and entrepreneurship – and to strengthen ties between the University and the region’s vibrant creative community.

“TEDxNelsonMandelaUniversity is more than a showcase of ideas; it’s an ecosystem where innovation, creativity and transformation intersect,” said Prof Azwinndini Muronga, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Internationalisation.

“By reimagining the creative arts, we unlock new ways to understand ourselves and drive meaningful change in the world around us.”

The event will conclude with networking opportunities aimed at fostering collaborations across disciplines, reinforcing Mandela University’s commitment to promoting innovation, cultural expression and social impact.
