Change the world

Academic excellence is incomplete without inner alignment, healing and a clear sense of purpose.

Mandela University’s Student Hubs of convergence (SHoC) within the Engagement Office, in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Bay Traditional Leaders, recently convened a close and reflective cultural integration session leading students to dialogue with the living reservoirs of African knowledge.

At the heart of this engagement was Nobonindaba, also known as Gcinashe Vambe, a traditional healer, who anchored the gathering in both wisdom and spiritual clarity.

Her reflections spoke to the situation of the modern African student, one of navigating the demands of academic life, while often standing at the edge of cultural dislocation.

Nobonindaba reminded the students that the pursuit of education must not come at the cost of identity. Instead, it calls for a deliberate grounding of the self, spiritually, culturally and morally.

In her counsel, students were urged to consciously turn away from harmful practices and behaviours that disrupt their growth, and to embrace a path of restoration and discipline.

Central to her message was the enduring ethic of Ubuntu, the understanding that as Africans, we are inherently bound to one another in care, responsibility and shared humanity.

In a time where many students carry silent burdens, kindness and compassion are not luxuries, but necessities.

Nobonindaba further cautioned against the careless exposure and misuse of African traditions, reminding attendees that some practices are sacred and require reverence, protection and proper understanding.

This calls for a continuous journey of learning, unlearning and relearning as students seek not only knowledge, but self-discovery.

This engagement affirmed that true education is not only about intellectual development, but about nurturing the whole being mind, body and spirit so that students may walk their academic paths without losing the essence of who they are.
