Nelson Mandela University mourns the passing of Professor Noel Chabani Manganyi, who was appointed the first director-general in the Department of Education, after the 1994 democratic elections.
A revered academic, writer and clinical psychologist by training, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Industrial Psychology at Mandela University’s graduation ceremony in December 2023. Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Andre Keet, paid tribute to Prof Manganyi.
“In his research and writings, Prof Manganyi highlighted the impact of systemic racism on the experiences and identities of black people.
"He not only laid a foundation for the Black Consciousness Movement but also highlighted the need for curriculum changes to address social and identity issues.”
Prof Manganyi was a prolific writer and published numerous works during his career. He gave hope to many black students through his story of being the first black person in South Africa to be registered as a clinical psychologist.
As a Professor of Psychology, his work contributed to the body of knowledge in this field. He challenged the field of psychology, to appropriately address mental health issues and make mental health services more available to all South Africans.
Apart from fighting for the liberation of South Africa from apartheid rule, he became the first director-general of the Department of Education, after the 1994 elections, and had the tough job of striving to undo the segregated education system.
Prof Keet said, “It was with pride that Nelson Mandela University awarded Prof Manganyi an honorary Doctorate in Industrial Psychology in 2023 in recognition for being the first black person in South Africa who registered as a clinical psychologist.”
Prof Manganyi held senior positions in higher education and his passing is a huge loss to the country on several levels, said Prof Keet.
