Change the world

A total of 54 students received certificates at the recent second Social Consciousness and Sustainable Futures (SCSF) programme Certification Ceremony.

The ceremony celebrated the achievements of students who demonstrated exceptional commitment throughout the programme, embracing diverse perspectives and engaging in the co-construction of knowledge.

The DVC Language and Teaching Dr Muki Moeng, shared congratulations and the aim of the programme, emphasising its alignment with the University’s mission and vision. She highlighted that the module brings the University closer to fulfilling its graduate attributes, aiming to cultivate socially aware, change-oriented citizens.

This is where students engaged with complex social issues and develop critical and reflective thinking skills, inter- and intrapersonal awareness, and innovative approaches to viewing and engaging with the world.

Furthermore, Dr Moeng emphasised that this module empowers students to question the status quo, encouraging them to critically examine their own beliefs and take an active role in society.

Professor Babalwa Magoqwana facilitated the event with the Executive Deans of Law, Dr Lynn Biggs, Humanities, Prof Pamela Maseko, and Education with Prof Shervani Pillay standing in for Prof Heloise Sathorar.

The SCSF course, which was piloted in 2018, covers eight themes in the first or second semester, with one lecture per week for six months. It focuses on essential social themes, including justice, fairness, freedom, sustainability, and recognition.

Through their experiences, students learn to analyse social conditions and demonstrated the University’s goal of fostering graduates who are critical thinkers committed to challenging oppressive systems.

Students from all faculties reflected on their experiences, drawing from themes facilitated by Prof Nomalanga Mkhize, Prof Dineo Gqola, and Prof Anzwinndini Muronga. They spoke about how this engagement sparked new ways of thinking and allowed them to question and expand their perspectives.
