The other teams in the tournament represent Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives.
Beach Handball is a dynamic, fast-paced sport played on sand, where two teams compete to score, by throwing the ball into the opponent’s goal. The game is known for its quick transitions, spectacular aerial shots, and the athleticism required to play in the sand.
Sibusiso was first introduced to Beach Handball during his university years at CPUT in Cape Town.
“I immediately developed a passion for the sport, the combination of the beach environment, the outdoors, and the high-energy nature of the game really appealed to me.
“Beach Handball is physically demanding, especially playing on sand, which requires a high level of fitness. But it’s also incredibly fun and spectacular — the thrill of diving, making acrobatic shots, and playing a game that is fast-paced and crowd-pleasing is unmatched,” he says.
Sibusiso’s breakthrough came in 2016, when he participated in the inaugural South African Club Championships in Durban. It was during this tournament that he earned his first selection to the National Team. “Since then, I’ve been proud to see the sport grow in South Africa and beyond.”
“Beach Handball has taught me valuable life lessons — teamwork, discipline, responsibility, and the importance of respecting rules. It has also exposed me to cultural diversity, allowing me to meet and engage with people from different backgrounds, which has shaped me into a more open and accommodating individual,” Sibusiso says.
“I am extremely excited and grateful for the opportunity to represent South Africa in the Maldives. Playing in such a beautiful tropical island nation — a dream destination for many — is both humbling and motivating. I look forward to giving my best performance on the court and flying the South African flag high.”
