The dialogue hosted by Nelson Mandela University’s Hubs of Convergence, in partnership with the Coega Development Corporation (CDC), brought together community gardeners, students, civic leaders, academics, and agricultural experts.

The event provided a collaborative space for learning, exchange, and strategic reflection on how to strengthen local food systems and community resilience in Nelson Mandela Bay.
The programme featured two panel discussions:
-
Addressing the challenges of food security – understanding the root causes, which explored the intersections of climate, policy, and grassroots realities affecting food security.
-
Pathways to a food-secure future – innovations, collaboration, and sustainable solutions, highlighting youth-led initiatives, agricultural innovation, and community-driven responses.

Speakers included representatives from the Department of Agriculture, local community forums, the University, and Coega Development Corporation, among others.
The event built on World Food Day 2025, aligning with the University’s Hubs of Convergence approach and Coega’s 2025–2030 Corporate Social Investment strategy, which both prioritise sustainable food systems.
The dialogue proved to be another demonstration of the University’s commitment to engaged scholarship and partnerships that drive meaningful change in our communities - with our communities.
