Change the world

17/03/2022

In welcoming the arrival of students and the return of staff to campus, safety and security is recognised as central to creating a vibrant campus environment.

As University Management, we are thus deeply perturbed about reports of criminal acts perpetrated on and around our campuses. As an immediate response, access control is being tightened, supported by heightened on-site supervisory support.

The following measures are also being prioritised:

  • Boom-gate management
  • Increased frequency and visibility of campus patrols
  • Infra-structure renewal, notably camera upgrading and replacement

Ensuring safe campuses requires continuous, multi-stakeholder involvement. Safety Forums are being established under the leadership of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: People and Operations, Mr Lebogang Hashatse, as the critical mechanism for working tirelessly with both internal and external stakeholders to protect our staff and students.

I appeal to all of us for vigilance and to play our part in looking out for our own safety and that of those around us.

You are also urged to follow the safety tips that are distributed regularly via Memo and online, and to report suspicious activity to uniformed Campus Protection staff in your vicinity or contact the relevant emergency numbers listed below.

Working together we are stronger!

I take this opportunity to, again, wish all of us a safe return to campus, and a successful 2022 academic year.

Professor Sibongile Muthwa
Vice-Chancellor
