Learners at Paterson High School busy with the “Milk for Money” recycling activity
The STEAM component is an initiative of the GMMDC and strives to introduce these activities to learners and educators at schools. The activities are designed to be interactive, fun, and educational, motivating learners in STEM subjects.

Learners at the Buffalo City Metro Inner City High School (BCMICHS) demonstrating their performance in the Tangible Africa Rangers coding game.
The events are held at the schools to make them more easily accessible to the learners and teachers. The first workshop, made possible by a generous donation from the Eskom Foundation, was hosted at Vukile Tshwete Secondary School in Keiskammahoek in February.
The next three workshops, supported by the AIDC-EC, were held at Buffalo City Metro Inner City High School in East London, also in February, at Paterson High School in Schauderville and Ethembeni Enrichment Centre in North End, both in Gqeberha and in April.
At each of the workshops the GMMDC staff facilitated two exciting hands-on activities.
The one explored off-line coding to enhance digital literacy, critical thinking and problem-solving, using Tangible Africa’s “Rangers“ app and the other, Milk for Money, focuses on the notion of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” and environmental stewardship.
Learners were divided into groups according to the various activities and teamwork was encouraged whilst they completed the activities.
The workshops were well attended and the feedback from both teachers and learners encourages the Centre to keep using these events to promote Mathematics and demonstrate how it is relevant and integral to life.
More exciting activities are planned for the second semester.
