A key highlight at Mandela University’s recent postgraduate students’ orientation was the keynote address by Professor Jonathan Jansen entitled "From Postgraduate to Professor: Seven Steps".

 

In his thought-provoking talk, Prof Jansen (above), Distinguished Professor at Stellenbosch University, shared insights on academic excellence, the importance of publishing, networking, and the role of mentorship in building a successful research career.

The University officially welcomed its new cohort of postgraduate students at the annual Postgraduate Orientation Programme, held at the Ocean Sciences Campus from 18 to 20 March 2025.

The event, aimed at equipping students with essential knowledge and resources for their academic journey, provided an enriching platform for engagement, mentorship, and institutional support.

Opening the programme, Professor Azwinndini Muronga (left), Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Internationalisation, highlighted the University’s commitment to fostering research excellence and supporting emerging scholars. He emphasised the importance of postgraduate studies in advancing knowledge and addressing societal challenges.

Dr Priscilla Mensah, Director of Research Development, presented on "Thriving in Postgraduate Research: Key Support Mechanisms and Policies", detailing the University’s extensive support structures, including research funding, statistical consultation services, and ethical research compliance.

Another engaging session, led by Professor Stephen Mago, focused on "Strategies for Building a Positive Relationship with Your Supervisor". He stressed the importance of clear communication, professionalism, and maintaining a growth mindset to ensure a productive and mutually beneficial supervision experience.

The energy in the room reflects the excitement and camaraderie among students as they embark on their research journeys.

Beyond academic discussions, the orientation programme also included an insightful screening of The Spirit of the Land, followed by a facilitated discussion on social justice and cultural narratives in research.

The three-day event featured interactive workshops on quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, research proposal development, and academic writing, equipping students with the tools needed for a successful postgraduate journey.
