The Portfolio Committee for Social Development (PCfSD) recently visited the GreenTEC cooperative at Mandela University’s Missionvale Campus to understand more about the operation of the project that they support financially.

GreenTEC is a group of formerly unemployed youth making up the Green Technologies Engineering Cooperative, and leading the Greenhouse Project, growing seedlings on Missionvale Campus.

The University’s Centre for Integrated Post School Education and Training (CIPSET) is working with the group of TVET college graduates on the greenhouse and community food systems project and provides mentoring support to GreenTEC, and to community farmers across the metro.

CIPSET’S action research project also helps the TVET team to apply developing artisanal skills through eco-conscious design.

"Our purpose here as a committee of social development is to oversee, to learn from you about what you are doing, and our role is to oversee your activities. We will then come up with ideas and correct any issues, if necessary," said the Portfolio Committee.

Sharon Masiza, Senior Director for Missionvale, Second Avenue, and Bird Street campuses, welcomed the members of parliament, followed by a presentation by the GreenTEC cooperative on how the project assists communities and some of the challenges still faced by this youth cooperative.

CIPSET researcher Irna Senekal stated that this visit pertains to funding granted to the cooperatives by the Provincial Department of Social Development.

The Portfolio Committee for Social Development came to meet GreenTEC and to see how the funding has been implemented, she said.
