Change the world

Nelson Mandela University congratulates the South African Students Congress (Sasco) on winning the Student Representative Council elections this week. After a day of voting at various voting stations across the Port Elizabeth and George campuses on Wednesday, Sasco saw a landslide victory and secured eight seats in the central student council.

Other organisations contesting the elections were the Democratic Alliance Students Organisation (Daso) and the Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command (EFFSC), garnering four and one seats respectively.

There were independent candidates, one of whom is Faculty Representative for Science.

The Independent Electoral Commission, represented by chief commissioner Bongani Zwane, presided over the elections.

A more detailed breakdown of the student organisations performance in the elections is as follows:

Campus representatives

  • South Campus – Sasco
  • North Campus – Sasco
  • Second Avenue Campus – Sasco
  • Missionvale Campus – Sasco
  • George Campus - Sasco

Faculty representatives

  • Arts – Sasco
  • Business and Economic Sciences – Sasco
  • Science – Independent
  • Law – Daso
  • Health Sciences – Sasco
  • Education – Sasco
  • EBEIT - Sasco

Sasco also won Oppidani votes, while a Daso representative will oversee the Office for International Education.

The new SRC takes over from the interim SRC (iSRC) that has been championing student issues since its establishment at the beginning of the year. Its establishment was as a result of the inability to hold elections last year due to the student protests that had gripped the institution and higher education sector last year.

The University welcomes the elections outcomes as a choice of the student electorate that chose to exercise their right to vote.

The University looks forward to working with the new SRC structure in addressing and co-creating solutions to the myriad of challenges in the higher education sector that impact on students' overall wellbeing.
