Dr Jean-Pierre Basson and Professor Gerrit Crafford

Dr Basson was selected as one of four winners in the Experienced Teacher category of the National University Teaching Awards (NUTA), whereas Prof Crafford was one of two recipients of Commendation in the same category.

A total of 50 portfolios were received from 20 universities and the main categories were Beginner Teacher, Experienced Teacher and Teaching Collaboration Teams.

The National University Teaching Awards (NUTA) serve as one of South Africa’s premier recognition programmes for teaching and learning.

Coordinated by South African University Teachers (SAUT) alongside national stakeholders, the initiative identifies a distinguished group of academics who drive innovation and leadership within public universities.

The selection process is highly competitive and rigorous, celebrating those who provide inspiration and shape future teaching practices across the higher education sector.

The adjudicating panel described Dr Basson a highly committed and influential teacher whose innovative practices have led to meaningful impact beyond the classroom, extending across departmental, institutional and even global contexts. His pedagogical approach was commended as creative, inclusive, thought-provoking and strongly valued by students.

Prof Crafford’s Commendation in recognition of the scholarly depth and dedication was reflected in his teaching portfolio, with the adjudicators highlighting his strong philosophical and theoretical grounding, engaging teaching materials, interactive learning activities and disciplinary scholarship that elevates the quality of his teaching.

Each university is limited to a maximum of four nominations (individuals or teams). The evaluation process comprises a comprehensive teaching portfolio, demonstrating excellence focused on students, context, knowledge, and professional growth. Shortlisted applicants then have to do a formal presentation to a national adjudication panel.
