Change the world

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University third year Interior Design students won gold for their exhibition stand at the recent Homemakers Expo held at the Boardwalk Exhibition Centre.

NMMU third year Interior Design students in the stand that won them a gold at the Homemakers Expo at the weekend.

The four-day Expo, which celebrates homeowners with this year’s theme being “a tribute to your home”, ended on Sunday, 25 June.

Student Stefan Steele, whose design was chosen from various others in a class design project, said he had always been intrigued by interior design.

Interior Design students were tasked, as a class project, with designing a stand. The best design was elected by fellow students and lectures and was then implemented as a class effort for exhibition at the Expo.

“I have always been fascinated by the different and beautiful designs. My surrounding environments have always played a huge role on my mood and how I have perceived the world around me,” he said.

He said furniture design had also always been of interest to him and the fact that the course involves manipulating the environments that people submerse themselves in, incorporating the design of the furnishings within these environments, he was sold on the idea of becoming an interior designer.

To him, the fact that his design won gold for him and his peers is a manifestation of his mantra – “I can”.

“I must also give a big shout out to the ladies in my class, without whom the stand design would have been nothing but a mere image on a piece of paper,” Steele said.

Steele believes that every design is complex, especially because some of the competing stands could have been considered engineering feats in their complexity.

“This meant that some unconventional thinking was required when it came to material selection,” he said.

The group managed to source donations of cardboard from Keypak, astroturf from Easiturf and got some extra help from Carved Unlimited with regards to the laser cutting.

Steele said the stand design aimed to be the physical manifestation of the University’s values.

“Due to this unorthodox origin, the stand manifested into a beautiful design that stood apart from the rest.”
