The visit, from 19 to 25 July 2024, was a significant step towards the mission of the University’s African Partnerships and Collaborations Project, which aims to foster equal and symmetrical collaborations that drive mutual growth, innovation and knowledge exchange.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Sibongile Muthwa led the delegation, which visited the University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, University of Cape Coast, and the University of Ghana.
This trip to Nigeria and Ghana was the second outreach of its kind, with previous visits to East Africa in 2022 to Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya.
The goal was to strengthen existing relationships and explore new avenues for collaboration in the University’s ever-growing African footprint. Nelson Mandela University is focused on co-creating equal and symmetrical partnerships that drive positive change and sustainable development across the continent.
Engagement in Africa
Prof Muthwa described these visits as an aspirational intellectual thrust for Nelson Mandela University, emphasising the value of engaging with established intellectual powerhouses.
“We are humbled by the immense knowledge and experience we can gain from these partnerships, yet we are equally proud of the achievements and innovations we bring to the table,” she said.
This balanced approach underscores the institution’s commitment to co-creating partnerships based on equality and mutual respect.
The delegation included Prof Andre Keet (Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Engagement and Transformation), Prof Judy Peter (Senior Director: International Office), Dr. Palesa Mothapo (Director: Research Management and Support), Dr. Nehemiah Latolla (Project Leader: African Partnerships and Collaborations Project), and Dr. Jenny Du Preez (Senior Manager Programmes: Critical Higher Education Transformation).
Key outcomes
The West Africa visit yielded significant outcomes, including the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the University of Lagos (above) and the University of Cape Coast. These agreements pave the way for collaborative research, academic exchanges, and joint projects that will benefit both institutions.
The University of Ghana (above), which signed an MoU with Mandela University in 2022, continues to be a vital partner in this network of African universities.
Additionally, a special task team has been established to draft a project-based MoU with the University of Ibadan.
This is chaired by Prof Peter and co-chaired by her counterpart at the University of Ibadan, Prof Olufunmilayo Fawole, who is Director: Office of International Programmes. This team will focus on developing specific collaborative initiatives that align with the strategic goals of both universities.
Consular engagements and student support
During the visit, the delegation also engaged with the South African Consulate (above) in Lagos, Nigeria, and the South African High Commission in Accra, Ghana. Her Excellency Grace Mason welcomed the delegation in Lagos, and Her Excellency Grace Jeanet Mason in Accra.
Both consular offices committed to supporting Mandela University’s engagements in their regions. They also pledged to work collaboratively on addressing the challenges associated with study visa issuance, which remains a significant hurdle for students wishing to study at Mandela University.
This cooperation is expected to streamline the visa application process and enhance student mobility between South Africa and these West African countries.
