Deputy Vice-Chancellor: People and Operations, Luthando Jack; Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Internationalisation, Prof Azwinndini Muronga and Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Learning and Teaching, Prof Muki Moeng participated in the Student Walk for Hunger
The 5km walk, looping between South and North campuses, was aimed at creating awareness and gathering support for the fight against student hunger. “This event was important, to highlight the plight of many students, which has an impact on their participation in the academic programme. We are living out our values and our humanness which is connected to our students’ dignity,” said Prof Muki Moeng.
Having witnessed incidences of students fainting from hunger, was why Student Governance’s Karen Snyman decided to prioritise the walk.
Participants were also encouraged to bring donations of non-perishable food items, sanitary products, toiletries or monitory contributions, to be used for the University’s nutrition project, which supports the many students, who rely on these donations, daily.
“This was a beautiful uniting of our University community, well done to our institution for creating such a healthy environment, to highlight the seriousness of caring for our students, without food,” expressed Business Economic Sciences’ Professor Ronnie Ncadi.
Student Representative Council President, Somila Komani said that she found this walk and the care displayed by staff, walking in solidarity with their students, “both meaningful and refreshing”.
Any donations towards this project may be dropped off at the offices of the DVC: Learning and Teaching on the 17th floor of the Main Building, on South Campus.
