Student formations at Nelson Mandela University are gearing up for the election of a new Student Representative Council (SRC) this week in the first ever virtual election, due to the prevailing pandemic and safety protocols that limit gatherings.

The SRC elections were meant to have taken place in the third quarter of last year, but had to be postponed because of the impact of the pandemic, and the SRC’s term of office was duly extended to coincide with the conclusion of the 2020 academic year. This extended period was also used to explore ways to hold safe, credible, free and fair elections through virtual platforms.

On 24-25 March 2021, students are due to take to the virtual polls between 08:00 and 19:00 to elect new office bearers.

“I wish to appeal to all student organisations and the student community to actively participate in this democratic process of determining the government of students at Mandela University,” said the Dean of Students, Mr Luthando Jack.

“The SRC elections will be online and this process will be run by the KDBS Consulting, which was duly appointed to independently manage this important project.”

Today, 23 March 2021, the contesting parties will present their manifestoes through a series of webinars that are due to take place from 13:00 to 17:00. Students have been encouraged to register for the webinars, which will take place as follows:

  • DASO Manifesto Launch: 13h00
  • EFFSC Manifesto Launch: 14h00
  • PASMA Manifesto Launch: 15h00
  • SASCO Manifesto Launch: 16h00

“We wish all candidates that will be contesting the SRC Elections success. Many thanks to everyone for their utmost commitment to deepening and advancing the ethos and values of democracy, as enshrined in our country’s constitution,” said Mr Jack.
