Nelson Mandela University, in partnership with the South African Union of Students (SAUS), the National Association for Student Development Professionals (NASDEV) and Higher Health, will host a two-day Student Indaba on Masculinities.

Advancing Democratic Values of Human Dignity, Freedom, and Equality through Critical and Positive Engagement with Masculinities

The Indaba will critically engage male students, leaders and scholars on issues of gender, identity and advancing the Constitutional principles of human dignity, equality and freedom in South Africa.

The Indaba will create a scholarly and reflective space to interrogate and reimagine masculinities through academic, sociological and gender studies perspectives.

It will emphasise evidence-based dialogue and collective accountability in fostering positive and responsible masculinities that advance gender equity, social justice and equality.

The Indaba will feature a distinguished line-up of speakers and panellists, with Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Nomusa Dube-Ncube, set to deliver the keynote address. Panellists include thought leaders such as Prof Nomalanga Mkhize, Prof Babalwa Magoqwana, Prof Kopano Ratele, Prof Malose Langa, and SAUS President Moses Nkambako.

The Indaba seeks to:

  • Strengthen academic and social discourse on masculinities within South Africa’s constitutional framework.
  • Foster collaborative efforts to annually engage and advance scholarship and programmatic interventions related to promoting responsible masculinities.
  • Support the provision of an accessible online resource repository to support programmatic activities.
  • Initiate a sector-wide consultative process for institutional commitment  to address gender mainstreaming and combating of gender-based violence and femicide.
