Change the world

Eight Nelson Mandela University students have been chosen as part of a select group of 100 top students at the Gradstar Awards held in Johannesburg recently.

Vhonani Maboga, Phumelela Matonana, Lana Ruth Nazer, Nkosinathi Radebe, Nkanyiso Brighton Mbete, Nobulele Phuza, Nhlakanipho Meke and  Si»Én Blackburn received their awards in recognition of  being part of the top university students across South Africa with exceptional leadership qualities.

The Gradstar Awards are a platform for university students to connect and build strong relations with some of the top companies in the country.

Nkosinathi Radebe, a first-year Accounting student says ,”we had to go through a lot of assessments throughout the year aimed at assessing our skills in problem solving, altruism, innovation, leadership, etc.”.

‘We went through psychometric testing, interviews and presentations for the judges to determine how we think and our overall qualities”, he says.

Nkosinathi, who after being selected into the Top 100 made it to the Top 10 says ,”I am still humbled by this because particularly as millennials are often referred to as failing the country.”

“I was privileged to be in the midst of some of the best young people with brilliant ideas our country has to offer that  really make a positive impact in society and economically,” he says.

Being chosen to be in the top 10, Nkosinathi feels he holds the responsibility of being an example to other young stars everywhere, encouraging and nurturing their brilliance and working with organisations that innovate solutions for economic and social development in our country.

“It was an honour to be chosen as one of the top students. It really shows that the little ideas we have and the efforts we put in transforming not only our selves but the environment around us is the first step in transforming the entire world as we know it”, he says.
