Change the world

14/05/2025

Nelson Mandela University will once again throw open its doors to welcome high school learners, their parents or guardians, and prospective postgraduate students for a front row view of what makes the institution a hub of academic excellence and vibrant student life.

Every year, the University offers prospective students an “insider view” of what they can expect when they choose to study at the institution.

Scores of youngsters are thus set to descend on the University’s Madibaz Indoor Sport Centre, on South Campus, on 16 and 17 May 2025, and at the Furntech Building on George Campus on 23 and 24 May for the institutional Open Days.

Open Day 2024

Attendees can look forward to a variety of stalls showcasing the University’s academic and extra-curricular offering, complete with information sharing and real-life demonstrations.

Marketing Events Specialist: Student Recruitment, Nosithembele Mrara, who coordinates the Open Days, said learners from schools in Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounds, including parts of the greater Eastern Cape, are expected to attend.

“The aim of Open Days is to showcase all that Nelson Mandela University has to offer – from academic programmes, student life and sport, to extracurricular assistance such as psychosocial support from the Emthonjeni Student Wellness,” Mrara said.

“They offer prospective students an opportunity to interact with the various offerings, enjoy demonstrations and be able to ask questions that will aid in their decision-making prior to application.

“High school learners, primarily those in Grade 11 and 12, are encouraged to participate in and attend Open Day and see what Mandela University has to offer, as well as to timeously apply to the institution for an increased chance of acceptance.”

There will be a Parent Information Session on Saturday at 10:30, which is aimed at equipping parents and guardians with tools to adequately support their children as they begin their next academic chapter. The University’s Registrar, Edgar de Koker, will address the session under the topic “A New Chapter Begins: Navigating University with your Child”.

This year will also see the inaugural Postgraduate Power Hour – to take place at 15:00 on Friday and from 09:00 on Saturday – targeted at current undergraduate students, graduates and working professionals considering further studies.

“The Postgraduate Power Hour is an invaluable opportunity for prospective students to get in-depth information on postgraduate programs, explore groundbreaking research opportunities, learn about funding and mentorship support and meet faculty representatives,” said Andrew Kock, Senior Recruitment Specialist: Mature and Postgraduate Market.

“It’s more than just information-sharing; it is about inspiring the next generation of researchers, innovators and thought leaders to take their next bold step with us.”

A range of support departments – from Financial Aid to Student Housing, Wellness Services, Universal Accessibility and Disability Services, Learning Development and more – will be on site to offer advice and answer your questions.

The University’s Access and Enrolment Office will be on hand to assist learners with online applications, and attendees are encouraged to bring along the following documents:

  • Grade 11 final results (for current Grade 12 learners) or Grade 12 final results
  • Copy of ID or Birth Certificate

The University looks forward to welcoming prospective students, parents and guardians to its campuses and trusts that through this engaging and informative experience, attendees will be inspired to take the next step in their academic journey with Nelson Mandela University.
