Thousands of first-year students are set to descend on Nelson Mandela University on Saturday, 31 January 2026, for the annual welcome ceremony, which will be addressed by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sibongile Muthwa, at the Madibaz Indoor Sport Centre, in Gqeberha, and the Furntech Building, in George.

 

In what promises to be a fun-filled and informative morning, about 8 000 new students and their families will have an opportunity to meet University staff in person and get a view of campus facilities ahead of the start of lectures on 09 February 2025.

“The Vice-Chancellor’s Welcoming Address and Faculty meet-and-greet marks a critical moment for our first-year students and their families, as they transition to higher education. It is an opportunity for them to be introduced to Mandela University and all that will shape their journey at our institution,” says spokesperson, Zandile Ngwendu.

Following the Vice-Chancellor’s address, new students will have an opportunity to engage with student-facing departments across the University, and move to faculty meet-and-greets at various venues across campus as follows:

The University’s Alumni Relations Office will also be engaging visitors throughout the day, also giving an opportunity to parents and guardians who are alumni to update their contact details and reconnect with their alma mater.

A Mandela University pop-up shop will trade outside the Indoor Sport Centre for those students who wish to beat the rush and buy their very first branded Madibaz items.

At the George Campus, Madibaz Sport will have an Info Desk outside the Furntech Building. The livestream can also be viewed on the University’s YouTube channel.

Mandela University is excited to welcome students to campus and looks forward to a successful 2026 academic year.
