Nelson Mandela University expresses its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Institutional Support and Development at Walter Sisulu University, Mr Sinethemba Mpambane, who was tragically killed on Thursday, 19 June 2025.
“As Council and the entire University community we are deeply saddened by this senseless act of violence, which follows a worrying pattern of similar incidents at various institutions of higher learning”, Chairperson of Nelson Mandela University Council, Judge Nambitha Dambuza, said.
“Acts of brutality represent a deeply troubling threat to the stability, safety, and mission of our institutions. Mr Mpambane’s untimely death is not only a devastating loss to Walter Sisulu University, but to the broader higher education sector, which is poorer for his absence” Judge Dambuza said.
Nelson Mandela University joins the higher education sector in expressing its utter disdain for crime and criminality.
We urge law enforcement authorities to act with speed and diligence in ensuring that justice is served, and that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to book. The Mpambane family and the entire academic community deserve no less.
Institutions of higher learning are cauldrons for knowledge-making, critical enquiry, innovation, and societal advancement. They must be protected as spaces of peace, intellectual freedom, and transformation — where criminality and violence have no place.
Mandela University stands in solidarity with Walter Sisulu University during this dark hour and we offer our support as you mourn the loss of a leader, colleague and visionary.
