Reasons to be Proud - #R2bP: Doctoral student in Economics at Mandela University Eslon Ngeendepi has been elected as Vice-President (Men) of the Namibia Hockey Union (NHU), the official governing body and federation overseeing all hockey activities in Namibia.

“My primary goal will be to make hockey in Namibia more inclusive, to develop the sport at grassroots level and create opportunities for players from all backgrounds to articipate and thrive,” says Eslon, who is a lecturer in the department of Economics, Accounting and Finance at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST)

Eslon also wants to strategically market hockey at all levels to increase its visibility and attract more players, sponsors, and partnerships.

By securing sustainable sponsorships and fostering key collaborations, he hopes to contribute to the long-term growth of hockey in Namibia and elevate its national profile.

He has been actively involved in Namibian hockey since 2005, when he became a founding member and chairperson of the NUST Hockey Club, also playing for the club and continuing to do so.

Under his leadership, the club has grown significantly and achieved notable milestones, such as winning the USSA C-Section championship last year.

Through the hockey council and serving on several committees at the Namibia Hockey Union, he has also made valuable contributions to the growth, development and administration of hockey in Namibia, helping to mold several players, introducing many to the sport, and contributing to strategies to grow the sport.

“I have also contributed to the sport by mentoring young players and participating in grassroots initiatives to grow hockey at the community level. While my focus has been on club-level hockey, my dedication to the development of hockey in Namibia has allowed me to work closely with regional and national structures, contributing to the broader growth of the sport,” he says.

Elon also holds a master’s degree in economics from Mandela University, and his doctoral research focuses on macroprudential policies and financial stability, in specifically Sub-Saharan Africa. The study investigates how macroprudential regulations and tools can be effectively implemented to maintain financial stability and mitigate systemic risks in the region.

This research is particularly significant to ensure that financial systems in Sub-Saharan Africa are resilient to external and internal shocks, which is essential for fostering sustainable economic growth.

By identifying and addressing vulnerabilities within the financial sector, the study aims to provide evidence-based insights to guide policymakers in creating a stable, inclusive, and resilient economic environment.

Eslon played hockey and participated in several club activities when he studied at Mandela University.

“My experience was truly enriching, both academically and socially. The vibrant campus life and activities inspired me to pursue my PhD at the University, where I hope to continue making meaningful contributions.”
