A son of New Brighton, Bra Feya was not only a brilliant and soulful trumpeter, but also a revered mentor, educator and torchbearer of South African jazz, whose work resonated far beyond our shores.
His music spoke to the heart of our nation’s history, struggle, beauty and resilience.
Bra Feya’s relationship with Nelson Mandela University was a valued and enduring one. In 2011, the University conferred on him a Council Prestige Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to society through music and jazz education.
Most recently, in November 2024, he headlined the University’s flagship Isisusa Jazz Fest Concert, performing alongside the Victoria Park High School Jazz Band and University graduates – a fitting testament to his enduring commitment to nurturing the next generation of musicians.
A quiet giant, Bra Feya’s artistry and humility earned him the respect and admiration of fellow musicians and audiences worldwide.
From performing with South African jazz greats such as Bra Winston Mankunku, Bra Tete Mbambisa and Abdullah Ibrahim, to forming powerful collaborations across continents, his music will remain an indelible part of the global jazz landscape.
Mandela University extends its deepest condolences to Bra Feya’s family, friends, musical collaborators and the broader arts and culture community. We mourn his loss and honour the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
May Bra Feya rest in eternal peace.
