The University is saddened to hear of the passing of one of its Honorary Doctorate recipients, Professor Dorcas Nompumelelo Jafta.

The isiXhosa literature giant, academic and community developer, passed away last Monday after a short illness.

In 2008, the University awarded her an honorary doctorate in recognition of her substantial contribution to the field of isiXhosa language and literature, and for her sterling service in establishing and nurturing isiXhosa language and literature in both the academic sphere and in the community.

During her illustrious career she published or contributed to no less than eighteen books on topics concerning isiXhosa. Over the years, Prof Jafta was engaged in community work through giving public addresses to encourage black communities in various educational endeavours.  She was involved for many years in broadcasting isiXhosa language and literary programmes on Radio Xhosa (now Umhlobo Wenene FM).

Condolences to her family and friends, may she rest in peace.
