A significant milestone in the academic calendar, this year’s ceremonies will celebrate the achievements of a total of 6 208 – including 235 master’s and 37 doctoral – graduates across various faculties. George Campus, set against the picturesque Outeniqua Mountains, will host two sessions where 471 students will be awarded their degrees and diplomas.
Honorary doctorates
The University will confer honorary doctorates on four distinguished individuals, namely:
-
Ms Letta Nomali Mbulu – in recognition of her exceptional contributions to music and the arts.
-
Ms Ntombifuthi Temperance Mtoba – for her trailblazing leadership in business and finance.
-
Professor Amina Caroline Mama – for her scholarly contributions to African feminism and social justice.
-
Professor David Richard Boyd – for his dedication to environmental rights and sustainability.
Doctoral research impact
The University continues to be a hub for pioneering research, as reflected in the doctoral degrees to be awarded on Friday. Some of the notable studies include research into pulpwood and afromontane forests, adding valuable insights into sustainable forestry and conservation efforts; and investigations into ecological preservation techniques that will aid in the protection of South Africa’s unique biodiversity.
Gqeberha Graduation Ceremonies
Following the George Campus sessions, the focus will shift to Gqeberha, where 16 ceremonies will be hosted at the Madibaz Indoor Centre on South Campus, starting on 11 April. The sessions will take place at 09:30 and 14:30 each day, excluding Saturdays.
Graduates and their families can look forward to a seamless experience, with each graduate receiving four guest tickets (doctoral candidates receive five), a commemorative programme, and their graduation certificate. Official photographers will be available to capture these proud moments.
The University has also dedicated an online platform to Graduation 2025, ensuring graduates and their loved ones can access all relevant information. For those unable to attend in person, all ceremonies will be livestreamed on the Nelson Mandela University YouTube channel.
Mandela University congratulations all the graduands and their families, as well as the academic and support staff, who have been pivotal in this milestone achievement.
