Held over eight days in January, the programme brought together more than 30 participants to co-create shared goals and ethical commitments. It deepened understanding of community development, particularly Indigenous Knowledge Systems, and promoted inclusive, participatory approaches to knowledge creation.

Participants represented Mangosuthu University of Technology, University of the Free State, Rhodes University, University of Venda, Eduvos, Gulu University (Uganda), NM-AIST, HSRC, Ikamva Youth, Assumption Development Centre, Sekoele Holistic Living Art Centre, North West University and Mandela University.
Day One focused on relationship-building and establishing shared goals, norms and ethical commitments, including a Social Value Compact and Ethical Contract. Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Engagement and Transformation, Professor André Keet, welcomed the participants, followed by a panel discussion on the role of community engagement in higher education.

Community development foundations and Indigenous Knowledge Systems were explored on Day Two, linking engagement to the Sustainable Development Goals. Dr Imtiaz Sooliman of Gift of the Givers surprised the audience with a keynote on humanitarian leadership and community care.
Day Three centred on community-based participatory research, knowledge democracy and inclusive facilitation, with stakeholder mapping and initial hub proposals.

The following three days participants engaged in arts-based inquiry, community site visits, peer review, and hub development, with attention to ethics, monitoring and evaluation and sustainability.
Day Seven examined pathways for integrating engagement into higher education through Mandela University’s Hubs of Convergence, supporting SDG-aligned project proposals.

The programme concluded on Day Eight with action planning, a public showcase, and a closing ceremony. Certificates were awarded, and a Circle of Commitment affirmed shared values. The K4C programme strengthened partnerships and reinforced commitment to community-centred engagement.
