Change the world

The need to support higher education leaders in South Africa and across the continent, while fostering a decolonial mindset, was the focus of the inaugural Internationalisation Leadership Short Learning Programme hosted by Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha.

Led by Professor Judy Peter, Senior Director of the International Office, and supported by Huba Boshoff, Special Projects Support to the International Office, the programme addressed a critical gap in higher education internationalisation, specifically the lack of an African-centred perspective on global engagement.

The five-day intensive initiative explored what defines impactful leadership in the internationalisation of higher education. Participants from institutions across South Africa, Namibia, and Uganda engaged in modules covering:

  • Strategy Development and Decolonial Theoretical Frameworks at national and global levels
  • Internationalisation, Leadership, and Ethical Professional Practice
  • Partnerships and Collaborations
  • Education and the Internationalisation of the Curriculum
  • Fiscal Management and Marketing
  • Communities of Practice

Through interactive sessions, reflective learning, and final presentations, participants translated theory into actionable strategies while building networks and collaborating with peers in the sector.

The programme featured renowned facilitators and experts in higher education internationalisation, including Dr Harvey Charles (Gateway International Group), Dr Nico Jooste (African Centre for Higher Education Internationalisation – AFRIQ), Leolyn Jackson (former Senior Director, CUT), Mervin Bakker (Executive Director, EAIE), Dr Divine Fuh (Director, HUMA, UCT), Chevon Slambee (Portfolio Lead for COIL, Virtual Engagement and Strategic Projects), alongside Prof Peter and Ms Boshoff.

Insights and outcomes from this pilot initiative will inform the next phase of the programme as Nelson Mandela University continues to nurture a new generation of transformative, Africa-centred higher education leaders.
