“We want the community to know that the Faculty of Law will be there for them,” said Deputy Dean Lindi Coetzee. “They are welcome to come to the Zwide Development Forum should they require legal assistance.
“We can assist with general legal services such as drafting wills, helping with the forms to report a death in the family, labour law-related matters, refugee and asylum seeker issues and any general law-related matters.”
Community members must register between 8.30 and 9.30am, and the consultations will run from 9.30am to 4pm. Community members are welcome to attend on the day and must bring proof of identity.
In addition to its mobile clinic, the Law Clinic offers on-campus services at Missionvale Campus all year round, aiming to provide:
-
Quality legal services to people from poorly resourced areas, who may not have the resources to visit a private legal firm;
-
Practical legal training for final-year law students.
-
Training to Candidate Legal Practitioners.
The Law Clinic is registered and operates as a legal firm like all other legal firms except that it assists members of the public who would not ordinarily be able to afford the services of a lawyer. The clinic is staffed by lawyers, candidate attorneys and paralegals who consist of final-year students registered for the Legal Practice course.
