Change the world

06/09/2019

A number of initiatives in line with the University’s long-term goal of being able to offer education anywhere and anytime are under way. Connectivity plays a pivotal role to this end and so the University continues to invest resources in expanding and densifying Wi-Fi access across all its campuses.

It has installed 1282 access points to date, providing 1,172,200m2 of uncapped Wi-Fi coverage in learning and teaching, and living and general social spaces on campus. It also investing in various off-campus projects to enable improved free access to the Internet for all students.

Connectivity Project

The Off-Campus Connectively project, for example, which began in August, is aimed at improving the connectivity strength for about 5000 students living in the 36 biggest accredited off-campus residences across the Metro.

The switch-over process to the University network will offer  off-campus students the same faster and higher capacity connectivity as those living and working on campus. At present, the larger residences are unable to meet capacity needs through the usual broadband suppliers like Telkom.

The rollout plan is on schedule with network engineers from the University currently assisting with the configuration changes required for access to the University network.  Most of these sites will be commissioned this week and the switch-over process completed shortly thereafter.

It should be noted that the existing Wi-Fi network in these residences will be improved. Students will not need to change their devices to utilise the improved connectivity.

The residences identified for improved connectivity with the status are:
