Nelson Mandela University hosted senior global internal audit leaders from the International Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), including it chief executive officer, Anthony Pugliese.

The visit, coordinated by the University’s Engagement Office, formed part of a broader three-year Memorandum of Understanding aimed at advancing professional readiness, applied learning, research and innovation in internal auditing.

It marked a strategic milestone in strengthening global collaboration between academia, government and the auditing profession.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Sibongile Muthwa welcomed the visitors in the meet-and-greet session, followed by a cultural performance by the University’s Xhosa Society, and reflections from institutional and civic leaders, including Nelson Mandela Bay Deputy Mayor Gary van Niekerk and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Engagement and Transformation Prof AndrĂ© Keet.

Speakers affirmed the critical role of internal auditing in promoting ethical governance, public trust, organisational resilience and accountability in a rapidly evolving global context shaped by technological advancement, geopolitical complexities and increasing demands for transparency. Dr Bruce Damons of the Engagement Office was the programme director.

The IIA representatives highlighted the organisation’s global footprint across 125 countries and its commitment to professionalising the field through Vision 2035, emerging leaders’ programmes, mentorship, scholarships and research initiatives.

With more than $275 000 (about R4.4-million) awarded annually in scholarships and grants, the Internal Audit Foundation continues to create access and development pathways for students. Panel discussions further explored artificial intelligence, emerging risks, geopolitics and the integration of governance, risk and compliance, emphasising agility, ethical leadership and innovation-based learning.

The engagement reaffirmed Mandela University’s identity as a dynamic African university committed to social justice and public good, positioning the partnership not as a single event but as an ongoing collaboration in service of society.
