Mandela University's Govan Mbeki Mathematics Development Centre (GMMDC) recently celebrated academic excellence at the annual Flip Potgieter Mathematics Project Student Awards, recognising outstanding first-, second-, and third-year Mathematics students for their dedication and achievement.

Dr Marguerite Walton (HOD: Mathematics), prize-winners Nathan McCallum, Kayra Parker-Nance and Troy Palframan, Dr Muki Moeng (DVC: Learning and Teaching) and Professor Christa Grobler (Executive Dean: Faculty of Science).

Hosted each year, the awards acknowledge the hard work, perseverance and commitment demonstrated by students throughout their academic journey. The event highlights the Centre’s ongoing broader mission to strengthen Mathematics education in under-resourced schools and to foster STEM excellence across the province.

Among the award recipients was Troy Palframan, currently an Honours student in Computer Science, who achieved 98% in Mathematics 3 in 2025.

“My connection with the GMMDC began in Grade 9, when I had already developed a strong interest in Mathematics,” said Palframan.

“One of the most significant aspects of the Centre’s work is how it connects people. It brings together learners from diverse backgrounds and schools. These awards are more than just a recognition of performance; they celebrate true academic commitment and remind us that our efforts are valued.”

First-year Mathematics winner Nathan McCallum, who achieved 90%, said the accolade serves as motivation to continue striving for excellence.

“This award encourages me to keep working hard and improving,” McCallum said.

“Through centres like the GMMDC, we have the potential to build a strong foundation for Mathematics in the Eastern Cape and strengthen education in the province,” he concluded.

The Flip Potgieter Mathematics Project Awards continue to play an important role in inspiring young mathematicians at Mandela University and reinforce the value of academic dedication.

This annual event is a highlight for the GMMDC, celebrating the success of project support Karoo schools and recognising top-tier talent, also honouring the legacy of the late Flip Potgieter, a mathematics lecturer at the University and co-founder of the Govan Mbeki Mathematics Development Centre (GMMDC).
