The first two graduates in BEngTech Marine Engineering graduated at Nelson Mandela University’s Autumn Graduation.

Matthew Nel and Aidan August are furthering their studies and have enrolled for the 4th year honours in Mechanical Engineering at the University, taking selective specialist modules in marine engineering focusing on ship and marine craft design.

A total of 70 students are enrolled in the undergraduate Marine Engineering programme at Mandela University, says Howard Theunissen, acting Head of Department for Marine Engineering (pictured with the graduates below).

Ocean Sciences is one of the University’s key growth areas and therefore the focus on marine engineering is a key strategy.

Marine engineering involves the application of engineering sciences (including mechanical, electrical, electronics) and computer science, to the development, design, operation and maintenance of ships, yachts and related watercraft, including propulsion and on-board systems.

It also integrates and applies high levels of engineering science to the area of naval architecture and marine structures. Graduates find employment either as designers or as engineers on ships at sea.
